Automated analysis

This page allows user to analyse midi files. Process detects chords, scale and harmonic functions and returns results in form of analytical file, statistics file and processing log. Analytical file can be loaded into Sibelius application via provided plugin. Statistics file is excel file displaying summary information about chords, scales and harmonic functions. Please see section Results interpretation for detailed explanation.

Loading results

The visualisation of the results of the computer harmony-analysis is now available only using Sibelius software, but in a few days/weeks we offer to attach also the instructions, how to display results using other score-editors.

Please refer to section Plugin installation first if you have not installed our Sibelius plugin yet.

1. Open Sibelius
2. For Sibelius 6 and 7 Navigate to Plugins -> Analysis -> Harmony Analysis
   
   For Sibelius 8 go to tab Review and then select Plugins -> Analysis -> Harmony Analysis
   
3. Select midi file and press Open
   
4. Press OK to load midi file
   
5. Add analysis file to program and press Open
   

Chord, inversion, scale and functional information will be inserted into musical score as lyrics

Results interpretation

If the file is successfully processed (Done status) the links to the analytical file, statistics sheet and processing log are available in the table above.

Analytical file

This is a text file, where each line represents a section of a measure in chronological order with the assigned chord, key/scale and harmonic function. It can be considered a table (csv) file with colon ":" as the separator of columns. We give an example, where we explain the meaning of all the columns.

1. Order of measure in the musical score.
2. End of section within the measure in quarter notes
3. Assigned chord, the first letter represents the root of the chord and then is stated the type of the chord (one of MAJOR_TRIAD, MINOR_TRIAD, AUGMENTED_TRIAD, DIMINISHED_TRIAD, DOMINANT_SEVENTH, DIMINISHED_SEVENTH, DIMINISHED_MINOR_SEVENTH, MAJOR_SEVENTH, MINOR_SEVENTH, AUGMENTED_SEVENTH, MINOR_MAJOR_SEVENTH, DOMINANT_SEVENTH_INCOMPLETE, DOMINANT_SEVENTH_ALT_INCOMPLETE, MAJOR_SEVENTH_INCOMPLETE, DIMINISHED_SEVENTH_INCOMPLETE, DIMINISHED_MINOR_SEVENTH_INCOMPLETE, MINOR_MAJOR_SEVENTH_INCOMPLETE).
   If no chord is assigned, "null" is stated. E.g. D MAJOR TRIAD is a chord with D as the root of the type MAJOR TRIAD (tones D, F# and A)
4. Assigned key/scale. Upper case letter means a major key/scale (Dur) and lower case means a minor key/scale (mol). E.g. "C" stands for C major and "a" for A minor
5. Assigned harmonic function. One of T, S, D or a Roman numeral for the key/scale degrees II., III., VI., VII.
6. Name of the file which this is an analysis of. Name of the midi file name for which this analytical file was computed. This is useful for the analysis of multiple files, when analytical files can be put together and processed in a table editor, such as Excel.

Plugin installation

This section describes installation of Sibelius plugin which is used to visualize results of the analysis.

Skip to Sibelius 6 and 7 steps or Sibelius 8

Sibelius 6 and 7

1. Download plugin code
2. Open Sibelius and navigate to Plug-ins - Edit Plug-ins...
   
3. Click New… to create new plugin
   
4. Complete Name with HamonyAnalysis, make sure Add to Plug-ins menu is checked, then complete Menu name with Harmony Analysis and Category name with Analysis
   
5. Select newly created plug-in Analysis/Harmony Analysis from the list and click Edit…
   
6. Select Run from the list and click Edit
   
7. Copy and paste all the text from the plugin file and paste it to the text box, press OK
   
8. Save plugin in the plug-in screen by pressing OK
   

Sibelius 8

1. Download plugin code
2. Open Sibelius and navigate to File - Plug-ins - Edit Plug-ins...
   
3. Click New… to create new plugin
   Complete Name with HamonyAnalysis, make sure Add to Plug-ins menu is checked, then complete Menu name with Harmony Analysis and Category name with AnalysisPress OK to save
   
4. Select newly created plug-in Analysis/Harmony Analysis from the list and click Edit…
   
5. Select Run from the list and click Edit
   
6. Copy and paste all the text from the plugin file and paste it to the text box, press OK
   
7. Save plugin in the plug-in screen by pressing OK again
